Data center grid capacity and electricity connection in Bulgaria
Grid capacity, transformer capacity and IT load are different measures. A transformer rating does not reserve a grid connection, and a proposed grid allocation is not a promise of usable IT power. APPAI Consulting connects these distinctions to site feasibility and development decisions for projects in Bulgaria.
Discuss your requirementsThree capacities, three questions
| Measure | Meaning | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Grid connection capacity | Supply conditions at a defined connection point; confirm scope with the responsible operator | A map indication does not reserve capacity or establish a delivery date |
| Transformer rating | Equipment apparent-power rating, usually stated in kVA or MVA | It is not the same as usable active power in kW or MW; power factor, derating and topology matter |
| IT load | Power consumed by IT equipment, distinct from total facility input | Cooling, losses and supporting plant must also fit within the facility power budget |
Why a capacity map is only a screening input
ESO's explanatory note states that its capacity map is informational and cannot reserve capacity or constitute an operator commitment. For a proposed site, confirm the responsible transmission or distribution operator, connection point, scope, conditions and project-specific evidence. Do not treat a nearby substation, transformer nameplate or historic connection as a transferable supply entitlement.
Connection milestones and readiness
Use the following as an evidence framework, not a prescribed legal sequence. Actual documents and responsibilities depend on the operator, site and applicable requirements. Record conditions, validity and dependencies rather than declaring readiness from a document's title alone.
| Stage | Evidence | Remaining question |
|---|---|---|
| Screening | Indicative information and dated operator discussions | Is a project-specific assessment needed? |
| Assessment and terms | Application and operator response describing the project | What scope and conditions apply? |
| Agreement and works | Relevant agreement, responsibilities and delivery milestones | Which works, approvals and conditions remain? |
| Energization and operation | Testing, acceptance and actual supply evidence | What load may operate under the agreed conditions? |
N, N+1 and 2N: capacity is not a reliability certificate
Architecture notation describes a chosen subsystem, not an entire site's reliability. Shared upstream equipment, switching, distribution paths, maintenance and load behavior must be reviewed. A redundant component count alone does not demonstrate concurrent maintainability, fault tolerance or Uptime Tier certification.
| Configuration | Interpretation | Design check |
|---|---|---|
| N | Capacity required to serve the defined design load | No additional redundant unit is implied |
| N+1 | Required capacity plus one additional unit in the defined subsystem | Verify remaining capacity when a unit is unavailable |
| 2N | Two complete capacity systems, each sized for the defined load | Verify independence, distribution paths and common failure points |
